What are Eye Allergies?

It is estimated that one in five Americans are doomed to suffer from certain eye allergy yearly. Common symptoms of eye allergies are red, itchy, burning and puffy eyes. The causes of eye allergies are not onefold but cover quite a few factors. Also medically called ocular allergies and allergic conjunctivitis, eye allergies can cause many troubles to people even though they are not usually considered as serious diseases. And if left untreated, eye allergies may pose a treat to our eyesight. Moreover, eye allergies are sometimes symbols of some a glitch in our body immune system. In a word, we had better pay more attention to these seemingly not-so-important yet virtually very significant eye diseases-eye allergies.

What Causes Eye Allergies?

Eye allergies are generally categorized into two types, namely. seasonal and perennial. Seasonal eye allergies are likely to fall on us at a certain period of the year, early spring, the whole summer and autumn. In these seasons eyes are especially allergic to much allergen that is spread by pollen, weeds and spores from molds. When exposed to these allergens in the open air, we are prone to get eye allergies. On the other hand, perennial eye allergies happen throughout the whole year. Latent infection of dust, mites, animal dander, perfumes, air pollution or some other medicines is the most common cause of perennial eye allergies. When unluckily getting an eye allergy, do not panic but tell what has caused it and make some remedies immediately.

What are the Symptoms of Eye Allergies?

As we mentioned above, eye allergies are classified into seasonal and perennial ones. Accordingly, the symptoms of these two kinds of eye allergies are not the same. In general, with seasonal eye allergies, the symptoms are usually specific to one particular season-spring, summer or winter. And if we get perennial eye allergies, the symptoms will probably last one year.

The most common symptoms of eye allergies are itching, red and puffy eyes which are mostly the reaction to allergens. Besides these ones, the common symptoms of eye allergies also conclude the following ones:

1. runny nose

2. sneezing and coughing

3. itchy nose, mouth or throat

4. headache from sinus congestion

5. fatigue and sleepiness

How to Deal with Eye Allergies?

The most significant means of dealing with eye allergies is avoiding the allergens to the most. We’d better stay in the house when pollen and weeds count the most in the open air. Close the windows and if necessary turn on the air conditioner. If we need to go out, wearing a pair of protective sunglasses is an advisable idea. Try to make the house and all the furniture cleansed so that dust and dirt will decrease in number. If it is humid, take measures to stop mold from growing in the house. For example, a dehumidifier will be of much use. If your eye allergy is caused by pet dander, you should take your pet out of your house at least for a few days. Never rob the itchy eyes for a temporary comfort because it will make the eye allergy worse.

If you feel that the eye allergies go worse and beyond control, go to the eye doctor as soon as possible. You can conveniently buy some over-the-counter medicine against eye allergies on your own. But prescription treatment is considered as more recommendable for it can offer you a long-term and even lifelong healing.
